Start the day with an unforgettable paddle along one of New Zealand’s most spectacular coastlines on an early morning sea kayaking adventure through the Pōhatu Marine Reserve. Departing at 8 am, this guided experience explores the outer coast of Banks Peninsula, where towering volcanic cliffs, dramatic rock stacks, hidden sea caves, and rugged reefs create an incredible backdrop for a morning on the water.

The adventure begins with a scenic drive from Akaroa aboard Pohatu Penguins’ 4WD minivans, travelling over the hills of Banks Peninsula to the remote coastline of Flea Bay. After meeting the experienced local guides and receiving a full safety briefing and kayaking instruction, set out in stable double kayaks to quietly explore this remarkable marine environment. The coastline is rich in wildlife, and sightings of New Zealand fur seals, seabirds, and little penguins are common. With a bit of luck, paddlers may even spot the world’s smallest and rarest dolphin species, the playful Hector’s dolphin. In calm sea conditions, the adventure may also include visits to Flea Bay Island and the impressive island arch.

No previous kayaking experience is required, with all equipment, safety gear, and expert guidance provided throughout the journey. Allow approximately 3.5 hours for the full experience, including around 1.5 hours on the water, leaving plenty of time to soak up the scenery, wildlife encounters, and peaceful atmosphere of this stunning corner of Akaroa.
