Escape into the remote beauty of New Zealand’s Rangitīkei River on a full-day float-and-fly fishing adventure, combining guided raft transport with the freedom to choose where to fish. The journey reaches secluded pools and river sections that are difficult to access by land, surrounded by peaceful wilderness and the dramatic scenery of the Rangitīkei Valley. With the gentle sound of flowing water and the rhythm of casting across the river, it’s a relaxing yet adventurous way to spend a day outdoors.
The day begins at 7:30 am, with an experienced raft guide navigating the river and taking the group downstream. Up to three anglers can share a raft, with the guide stopping or holding the raft wherever the anglers choose to fish. You are free to work the river at your own pace, moving between promising pools and runs throughout the journey. A full picnic lunch and refreshments are included, while a lifejacket, wetsuit, and helmet are provided if required. No rafting experience is needed, as you’ll travel as passengers while the guide handles the river.
What makes this experience special is the combination of remote river access and fishing freedom—you’ll decide where you want to cast rather than following a fixed fishing itinerary. The standard experience is not guided fly fishing, so anglers should bring their own fishing equipment, licence, and skills; a dedicated fly fishing guide can be arranged separately for those who prefer specialist instruction. Available from 1 October to 30 April, the experience can also be extended into a multi-day adventure with overnight riverside camping, creating an unforgettable escape into the wild Rangitīkei landscape.
