Lake Mapourika is part of the wild sea-run salmon spawning route from the Tasman sea in the lake via the Okarito river.  Introduced lake salmon are present all year round, however the West Coast salmon fishing season runs from October to March 31st annually.  Luckily, here you can fish for brown trout all year.

A fishing charter is one of the best things to do in the rain in Franz Josef, and the trout fishing can be excellent on wet days.

Fishing techniques include trolling, harling and spinning. You may keep your catch if it’s legal and in season, otherwise you will catch and release.
