The hot ocean water pools in the heart of Mount Maunganui are the only of their kind. The variety pools range between 34 – 39° Celsius, heated via a titanium heat exchange system:
- Pacific Ocean water is pumped from nearby Waikorire (Tauranga Harbour) and passes through a filtration system before heating.
- The heat exchange occurs when the ocean water and hot bore water pass through the titanium exchangers in separate channels. The two never mix.
- The hot bore water originates from underground saltwater streams 600m deep under Mauao (Mount Maunganui).
