Looking for an active day immersed in nature? This full-day adventure combines a spectacular morning hike through ancient native forest with an unforgettable afternoon sea kayaking safari in the wildlife-rich waters of the PÅhatu Marine Reserve. Perfect for those with a good level of fitness, it offers the chance to experience the incredible landscapes of Banks Peninsula both on foot and from the water.
The day begins with pickup in Akaroa before travelling by 4WD minivan to the start of the hike. Armed with a map and instructions from the guide, enjoy a self-paced walk along part of the famous Banks Track, descending through ancient red beech forest and towering tree ferns towards remote PÅhatu Bay. Along the way, discover hidden waterfalls, listen to native birdsong, and explore the prehistoric Tutakakahikura Scenic Reserve, home to trees more than 400 years old. Upon arrival at PÅhatu Bay, take time to relax, enjoy lunch, and make use of the fully equipped kitchen and bathroom facilities before preparing for the afternoon adventure.
At 12:45 pm, swap hiking boots for paddles and head out on a guided sea kayaking safari along the dramatic outer coast of the PÅhatu Marine Reserve. Towering cliffs, rugged rock stacks, reefs, and deep-sea caves create a breathtaking backdrop as the coastline reveals its abundant wildlife. Encounters with little penguins, New Zealand fur seals and their pups, seabirds, and, with a little luck, the world’s smallest and rarest dolphin species, the Hector’s dolphin, make every trip unique. In calm sea conditions, the adventure may also include visits to Flea Bay Island and the impressive island arch.
