Join the NZ Sailing Trust for a truly exhilarating experience – one to blow away the cobwebs away and tick off that bucket list – racing on board a maxi yacht!
Steinlager 2 (The Big Red) and Lion NZ were Sir Peter Blake’s iconic yachts – they’ve raced around the world and won the Whitbread race – there are no yachts quite like them. We are delighted to invite you aboard and experience the adrenaline rush of rum racing. Taking place on Friday afternoons throughout the season, you’ll meet us at the Viaduct and duel other yachts out on the harbour for the honour of winning.
Anyone can join – so long as you’re aged between 13 and 113! There’s no need for ‘sea legs’ and no experience of boats is necessary. Our crew will give you all the support and guidance you could possibly need. We are totally cool if you want a spectator role – or you fancy joining in – hoisting the sails or using some bicep muscle as a grinder. Just bring soft soled non marking trainers, a couple of layers of clothes and we’ll provide the rest… The racing itself is about an hour long so you’ll be back at the Viaduct in time to share some fantastic stories over a drink or dinner in one of the many good bars and restaurants.
